Fishermen Winched To Safety After Six Hours Stranded At Fingal Headland

A group of fishermen has been rescued from a dangerous fishing spot at Fingal Headland over the weekend.

Eight men threw a line in from the rocky outcrop on Sunday morning, but got cut off from shore a few hours later, thanks to the changing tide.

One man risked his life swimming back to the beach, losing all of his fishing equipment in the process, while the rest of the group called for help around 11:30am Queensland time.

The Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter was sent out to bring them back to shore one by one, around 4pm.

Chris Samuels from Surf Life Saving New South Wales told Nine winching the stranded fishermen to safety was the best option.

"They didn't have any protection from the elements so this was the safest and the zero-risk way to get them off those rocks," he said.

"Luckily this one turned out nice and safe and we were able to extract them from the rocks easily, but it could have been much worst".
