Two men have been killed after a stolen ute slammed into the passenger side of a car on the Princes Highway at St Peters early this morning.

The grey Toyota Hilux was travelling north on the Highway when it collided with a blue Hyundai Elantra travelling west on Canal Road just after 4.30am.

One of the men died at the scene while the second, who was in a critical condition, died a short time later.

The male driver of the Hilux was arrested at the scene and is still "assisting" officers at Newtown Police Station with charges pending.

Police have confirmed the stolen Toyota was involved in an earlier pursuit, but it was terminated before the crash.

All lanes of the Princes Highway have reopened in both directions.
