Police investigating a fatal crash on Atkinsons Dam Road at Somerset on Wednesday night (January 30) believe that high speed and no seatbelts were major contributing factors in the deaths of two men.

The accident happened around 9pm with initial investigations suggesting that the Holden Commodore Ute was travelling on the straight stretch of road and collided with a tree.

The two occupants of the vehicle, a man aged 44 and another 42, passed away at the scene that was described by police as "quite catastrophic".

Police say that it appears that both driver and passenger of the Ute were ejected from the vehicle and they were investigating into whether speed was a contributing factor.
