Everyone Is Sad: Nia Vardalos Files For A Big Fat Greek Divorce

My Big Fat Greek Wedding creator, Nia Vardalos, has filed for divorce from her estranged husband, actor Ian Gomez.

Nia and Ian got married in September 1995 with the wedding and its lead up inspiring her to create 2002’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding; the highest-grossing rom-com film in US history.

Ian filed his response to Nia’s divorce filing on Friday, with both citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. 

In court documents obtained by PEOPLE, the pair are both seeking joint legal and physical custody of their 11-year-old daughter Ilaria Vardalos Gomez.

“We’ve been respectfully separated for a lengthy period of time. Our relationship became a friendship so the decision to end the marriage is completely mutual and amicable,” Nia and Ian wrote in a joint statement to the publication.

“It is our hope that decency will prevail on the reporting of this story which will soon be yesterday’s news. Thank you for respecting our privacy.”

At least we will always have Toula and Ian...
