It's believed two prisoners who've escaped a minimum security jail on the Mid North Coast could be heading for the Hunter.

35-year-old Phillip Sampson and Kurt Reynolds - aged 40 - are on the run after taking off from the Aldavilla facility at around 10:45am today.

Police believe the pair may be travelling in a black 2005 Toyota Camry Sportivo sedan - with NSW licence plates JM677.

The pair were last seen wearing green tracksuits and running shoes.

It's believed the men could be making their way to the Newcastle, Toronto or the Casino areas.

Police are warning the public NOT TO APPROACH THE PAIR - anyone with information is urged to contact police.
