Police are promising a strong presence at Saturday's Groovin the Moo music festival at Maitland Showground.

In particular there will be a strong focus on drug use, following the dramatic collapse of a 15-year-old girl at last year's event. Paramedics performed CPR on the teen after she stopped breathing due to an overdose.

She was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Police say like previous years, they will screen and search revellers entering the venue, while officers will also patrol the nearby streets and Maitland train station.

Acting Inspector David Bender has issued a warning for partygoers that they will come down hard on anyone caught with drugs.

"I encourage everyone that's attending to do it safely, do it sensibly and have a good time," he said. "But expect to have matters taken further if they come under our notice for anything adverse."
