Growing and maintaining a beard is a solid commitment – an effort many Canberrans go to on a daily basis.

You’ll no doubt see plenty of locals sporting beards of varying styles around the capital, particularly in hot spots like Braddon.

But where will all the beard lovers congregate this weekend?

Australian Beard and Beer Day kicks off at King O’Malley’s on Saturday the 4th of August at 11am.

Judges will be on the lookout for locals with the best short beards, long beards, creative beards, and even the best moustache!

Out of all those categories, they’ll crown the best beard in Canberra, who’ll walk away with $500 cash!

King O’Malley’s Managing Director Peter Barclay said it’s for a great cause.

“We’ve teamed up with two charities – Menslink and Karinya House. So we’ll have a silent auction on the day, with lots of family events too. We’ve got face painters, Soul Cartel band, chess and live music,” he said.

“We’re hoping to raise around $10,000 with the whole campaign and we’ll see how we go. The awareness is really important too for the work Menslink do and Karinya House.”

So what are the judges looking for? How do you make yourself stand out?

“For the short beards, they’re looking for something that’s nice and trim. The longer beards, nice and think density and colour. The creativity of the creative beards – that’s always interesting. We’ve also got another one to get people warmed up for Movember, that’s Canberra’s best moustache,” he said.

“The public are invited to come along to cheer for their favourite and that’ll definitely influence the judges.”

Matt Lenard took out the title of Best Beard last year for his creative facial hair.

“Matt has a huge moustache and beard which he twirled into an unusual shape. So just the completely creativity,” Mr Barclay said.

It’s also Beer Day, so there’ll be a range of Australian beers on tap including a Beard Beer which is being brewed especially for the event by StoneAge Brewery.

Beard wearers and appreciators of the nation’s capital – mark this event in your diaries!
