Drivers in eastern Sydney will now be able to access digital licences.

The technology has been trialled in Dubbo and means that a mobile phone app will replace the traditional card as ID.

Today, police and authorities have stressed that the technology is secure and explained how the technology will work in day-to-day use.

"We want to make sure that the public are aware that the app is their digital driver's licence information," a police spokesperson said.

"We will not be sniffing the phone or taking any information out of it.

"We will just be taking a QR reading of their licence.

"So the people of the trial and the people of NSW can be absolutely satisfied that their information is secure."

Minister for Services Victor Dominello agreed, saying that this is "world-first technology" which is more secure and convenient.
