A man accused of using a mobility scooter to tow a 17-foot boat through Lake Macquarie last month has now been charged.

Police allege the 35-year-old was caught riding the scooter while towing the boat on the Pacific Highway at Belmont on October 19.

He's been charged with driving while disqualified, using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle on the road and for using an unregistered trailer.

The man will face Belmont Local Court in January.
