Cane Toad Spotted In Port Stephens

Port Stephens residents are being warned to keep an eye out for cane toads.

A dead cane toad was recently spotted in Hawks Nest, prompting MidCoast Council to urge locals to report any other sightings.

"Cane toads are ugly, unwanted and a serious threat to the natural environment of the MidCoast Council area," council's Mat Bell said.

"We are asking that all local residents and visitors be vigilant, particularly in the vicinity of the area of the sighting, to ensure that there is not a local population of this species".

It's not the first time they've made their way down from Queensland, with toads usually hitch-hitching on trucks and cars.

If anyone suspects that they've found a cane toad, they're asked to capture the animal alive, take photos and contact Council, the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) or NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service for further advice.
