Bunbury City Mayor Gary Brennan has backed a shock proposal for the regional town to be utilised as a potential AFL hub for the finals series, should teams be rushed into the Western state.

The league remain unclear and are working through various options for locations, as the growing COVID crisis escalates in the eastern states causing travel concern.

Crowds have not returned to AFL matches in Victoria or New South Wales, and Western Australia looms as a viable option if accepted by Premier Mark McGowan.

Mayor Brennan doesn't want to downplay the risk of allowing domestic travellers into the community, but admits it's an opportunity for exposure in a footy-hungry regional town.

“Attracting an AFL club to Bunbury would have great social and economic benefits, including on retail and hospitality, along with providing promotional opportunities for our wonderful City,” he said.

“It would greatly enhance our reputation as a sporting hub as Bunbury already hosts a number of State and national sporting events, thanks largely to its partnership with Sports Marketing Australia."

“Any additional elite level games or events we can attract to Bunbury would be greatly welcomed.”

Brennan said the facilities at Hands Oval is a key pillar in south-western football, and would act as a substantial venue if required.

“Hands Oval is the home of the South West Football League and while the infrastructure is out-dated, the oval itself is definitely suitable to host elite games or training sessions.

On Tuesday, the Shire of Donnybrook Council will hold a meeting to discuss the proposed invitation, with feedback from the city the driving force.

Ministers and officials are eager to host the major venues at Optus Stadium, as the AFL considering all possibilities.
