The bodies of two young children who went missing in Townsville yesterday have sadly been discovered deceased in Ross River.

The brothers, aged three and five, went missing from the suburb of Cranbrook. They were later found dead in the Ross River on Tuesday morning.

"The Queensland Police Service have sadly located the bodies of two boys who went missing from Cranbrook yesterday," a police spokesperson said in a statement.

About 100 people spent the night searching for the boys overnight after police issued an amber alert on Monday afternoon.

Senior Sergeant Ian Wilkie says there doesn't appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

"At this stage, it's just a tragic incident," he told Seven News.

"They looked they were having fun and it's turned to tragedy."

The boys went missing from a home on Brett Street about 5.30pm, and were seen on CCTV walking along that street towards the river.

Their bodies were found in the river, near Cranbrook Park.
