Woodstock is one of those events in history which became much bigger than just the music (and that’s saying something considering the lineup!), encapsulating the radical cultural change of an entire generation.
2019 will mark 50 years since the three-day festival attracted half a million people to New York in support of music and peace.
To celebrate the milestone, original event co-creator Michael Lang has confirmed a three-day festival will be happening this August!
The event will find a new home at Watkins Glen, New York, however will share the same dates from August 16 -18.
The first lineup of acts are expected to be announced in February, but considering this is WOODSTOCK, some pretty major names should be on the cards.
“It’ll be an eclectic bill.... It’ll be hip-hop and rock and some pop and some of the legacy bands from the original festival,” Lang told Rolling Stone.
“We’re also looking for unique collaborations, maybe some reunions and a lot of new and up-and-coming talent.”
Tributes to those who made history in 1969 like Jimmy Hendrix and Janis Joplin are also expected.
Lang also explained to The New York Times that they don’t want this to be just any festival, and are keen to reignite the spirit of activism the original is famous for.
“We want this to be more than just coming to a concert… hopefully a lot of the bands will become part of this effort to get people to stand up and make themselves heard, to get and out vote.
“And if they don’t have a candidate that represents their feelings, to find one—or to run themselves.”
He elaborated on how Woodstock 50 will differ from Woodstock ’99, explaining, “ ’99 was more like an MTV event than a Woodstock event, really. I take some responsibility for that. It was also kind of an angry time in music.”
Speaking with Rolling Stone, he added, “Woodstock ’99 was just a musical experience with no social significance.... It was just a big party. With this one, we’re going back to our roots and our original intent. And this time around, we’ll have control of everything.”
We’ll most definitely keep our eyes peeled for updates on this one!
