At least 14 people have died and more than 160 were injured after a strong and shallow earthquake hit Indonesia's Lombok Island, a popular tourist destination next to Bali, Indonesian officials say.

The quake which hit early on Sunday damaged more than 1,000 houses and was felt in a wider area, including on Bali, where no damage or casualties were reported.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of only seven kilometres. Shallow earthquakes tend to do more damage than deeper ones. At least 130 aftershocks were recorded.

East Lombok district was the hardest hit with 10 deaths, including a Malaysian tourist. At least 162 people were injured, including 67 hospitalised with serious injuries.

Australian tourists are now scrambling to leave the stricken island and those heading there are being warned to check their accommodation and flights in light of the disaster.
