There are 250 opportunities for locals to upskill and get into work, with security increasing as the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games near.
There is demand for more people to be trained up to fill more than 4000 contract security positions across the event, as well as in the lead up and following.
That has got organisations offering subsidised training to become a Security Officer. In Townsville, there are 250 positions available, with the opportunity for ongoing work after the event.
Asset College Townsville Manager David Powell said they’re looking for people from all walks of life, not just the stereotype.
“It’s not about how big you are these days, it’s about how you speak to people,” he said.
“You could be escorting the British basketball team, you could be doing mobile patrols, you could be sitting in a monitoring room watching video cameras, you could be doing bodyguard duties.”
Mr Powell says there shouldn’t be any upfront costs, but it will depend on the level of Centrelink you’re receiving.
“We’re looking forward to changing lives here, and getting people into a job they’ll love for many, many years,” he said.
There’s two information sessions with representatives for the Commonwealth Games, on August 2.
Mr Powell would like people interested to visit the Asset College office (268 Charters Towers Rd, Hermit Park) or phone them (4725 4722) to express interest for which session they’d like to attend.
