Heads up for anyone out and about in Sydney today, with news that police are cracking down on jaywalking and not wearing helmets while cycling.

Operation Pedro will be in effect from 6am to 6pm today, with the one-day operation an attempt to curb pedestrian and cycling accidents.

Jaywalking could attract a $75 fine on-the-spot, while this could escalate to $2,200 if contested in court and lost.

This surrounds issues such as crossing on a red pedestrian signal and not crossing quickly enough.

For cyclists, the operation is concerned with those not wearing a helmet ($337 fine), riding on the footpath ($112 fine) or not having a working bell ($112 fine).
