Police are hunting two men responsible for gunning down a Sydney dad outside his Peakhurst home - with his mum and two young kids inside.

Officers say Rabie Daher, 34, is in a stable condition after being shot four times in his Johnstone Street driveway around 8pm last night.

A friend who was with Mr Daher at the time of the incident is also in hospital with a broken arm and a suspected broken jaw after being pistol whipped in the attack.

Acting Superintendent Scott Bingham told reporters police are still trying to establish a motive.

"The two males had been returning to the address. They were actually been waiting to enter the premises through the garage when they were approached," he said.

"We actually know both parties. We believe this is a targeted attack."

Police are urging any witness who may be able to assist with the investigation to come forward.
