If you shop at Harris Farm Markets for your eggs, you'll want to know about their amazing new milestone!
The stores are now going "cage-free" and will now sell their own branded free-range eggs as well as from other free-range egg suppliers!
The definition of “free range” under Australian Consumer Law was recently reviewed, and Australian companies are no longer allowed to use the words “free range” on their cartons if their chickens don't have regular access to an outdoor range during daylight hours, can't roam freely, or if more than 10,000 chickens are kept in one hectare of land.
Harris Farm Markets' eggs will definitely fall into the "free range" category as they told Broadsheet that they only have 1500 chickens roaming free per hectare.
To celebrate the change, Harris Farm Markets will be holding an Egg Amnesty event at their Sydney stores this Saturday, where customers can drop off their caged eggs and receive a carton of the stores free range eggs for FREE!
The caged eggs will them be given to Ignite Food Store, who will redistribute the eggs them to low-income families in need!
So you'll be helping the hens and helping the local community!
In case that wasn't enough, Harris Farm Market stores in Bondi Westfield, Drummoyne, Lindfield and Manly will be whipping up FREE omelettes to the public from 7am and 10pm on the Egg Amnesty day!
Harris Farm director Tristan Harris released an official statement about the day, saying:
“We’re a family-owned business that believes good food is a combination of great taste and the best production practice. And with eggs, this starts with happy hens. Eggs are a natural wonder and the chickens that lay them should have the opportunity to live in the best conditions.”
Egg lovers, see you this weekend!
