An elderly woman is in hospital and her dog has died after being attacked by another dog in Sydney's west.

The 87-year-old was walking her small pet dog on Stafford Street, Penrith on Sunday evening when a large unleashed dog attacked.

The elderly woman tried to fend off the dog but was knocked over and bitten on her hands and arm.

She also sustained injuries to her head and hip.

The 46-year-old female owner of the larger dog and a passerby were able to lock the attacking dog inside the owner's car.

They then assisted the injured woman until ambulance crews arrived.

While the woman's injuries are not believed to be critical, the woman's small pet dog died.

The larger dog was surrendered to the council to be put down.

Police are currently investigating.
