Victoria Police are celebrating a successful three month amnesty, with thousands of firearms handed in across the State.
With the end of September counts in, a total of 1198 firearms have been surrendered in the Western Region - covering the area from Mildura to Geelong.
The Eastern Region, covering Forest Hill to Bairnsdale, saw 1681 firearms surrendered.
419 firearms have been surrendered in the North West Region, which covers an area from Melbourne’s CBD to Whittlesea
Over 350 firearms have been surrendered in the Southern Region, ranging from Prahran to the Mornington Peninsula.
Officials predict these numbers will only grow as the final figures are tallied.
Rare and historically significant firearms and weapons are set to be on display in museums across the country.
Licensing and Regulation Division’s Superintendent Paul Millett says the amnesty is one of the most effective Victoria has seen for over a decade.
Locals who find firearms they do not own are urged to call 000 immediately.
