The Murray Riverina Business Chamber is backing calls from the state branch of the organisation for changes to the delivery of employment services to help address youth unemployment.
The services are currently delivered under the Federal Government’s Job Active program.
It comes as figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show the youth unemployment rate in the Murray region is at 22%.
The figure is alarming, compared to the state average of 10.4%.
The Chamber’s Regional Manager Andrew Cottrill says the figures are disappointing, given the long-running and well-publicized concerns of employers in most industry sectors regarding skill shortages.
Mr Cottrill says that’s why the NSW Business Chamber in a submission to the Federal Government has recommended a greater focus on measures that enable an integrated transition from school to the workforce.
