Officials have welcomed the return of freight trains to the Mildura line, following major track upgrades.
The works come under the $440 million dollar Murray Basin Rail Project, with a freight train leaving Merbein for Melbourne.
The works focused on standardizing the gauge, with axle loading also increasing from 19 tonnes to 21 tonnes; allowing trains to carry additional freight.
The move will reconnect primary producers and freight operators in Victoria's north west with the State's major ports.
The scheme is jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments, employing more than 500 workers.
The next stage of the Project will upgrade the Sea Lake and Manangatang Lines.
