We're worse than New Zealand too

WA Tops States For Alcohol Related ED Admissions

More people rock up to hospital emergency rooms with an alcohol related problem in WA, than any other state.

Researchers took a snapshot of ED's around the country and New Zealand at 2am on December 6.

Their survey found that one in eight presentations in Australia were alcohol-related, while the rate for New Zealand was one in seven.

Professor Daniel Fatovich, Head of the Centre for Clinical Research in Emergency Medicine said WA had the highest alcohol-related attendances of any state with one-in-five, and was only surpassed by the Northern Territory, which had one in three.

Professor Fatovich, who is an emergency physician at Royal Perth Hospital, said drinking no more than four standard drinks on a single occasion, would limit chances of alcohol-related harm.
