A Western Australian council has threatened to stop taking recycling from households who don’t follow the rules.
Many councils are doing bin inspections to make sure people aren’t putting contaminated waste products into their recycling bins, Perth Now, reports.
The Shire of Denmark has started doing bin checks after it was revealed 40 per cent of the shire’s recycling was going to landfill due to contamination.
People who get it wrong will initially receive letters and pamphlets to explain the rules – but those who continue to get it wrong could have their curbside collection suspended.
The West Australian Local Government association has also launched a “Bin Tagging Program” which aims to improve kerbside recycling separation.
