A man has been charged for allegedly assaulting an off-duty police officer in Hamilton.
At about 3am on Saturday the officer pulled up to traffic lights at the intersection of Donald Street and Beaumont Street.
It’s alleged one of three men who were crossing the road at the time put his hands on the vehicle and then bounced it up and down.
The 26-year-old policeman then got out of his car to talk to the trio.
While he was speaking to one of the men, a second is accused of punching him to the face and knocking him to the ground.
The group fled and the officer was taken to John Hunter Hospital for observation. He's since been released.
On Sunday morning, a 24-year-old was arrested at a home in Cessnock.
He’s been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and will appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, February 16.
