A man’s fighting for life after falling off the back tray of a ute, allegedly driven by a drunk driver near Cessnock.
The Toyota Hilux was turning out of Bell Street into Atkinson Street at Bellbird at about 1:30am Saturday, when the 23-year-old fell onto the road.
He suffered severe head injuries and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
The 25-year-old male driver was breath tested and later returned a reading of 0.098.
He was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm (DUI), dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm (drive manner dangerous), cause bodily harm by misconduct, negligent driving, mid-range PCA and drive with passenger in/on part of vehicle not enclosed.
His licence has been suspended. He was given bail to face Cessnock Local Court on June 20.
