A 26-year-old Weston man has been charged — accused of deliberately lighting a Kurri Kurri fire which threatened homes and burnt through over 30 hectares of bush.

Firefighters were called to the blaze near Boundary Street just at 11:30am on Tuesday, with nearly a hundred needed to contain it.

Central Hunter police arrested the man a short time later at a home on Fifth Avenue, Weston.

The man was charged with intentionally cause fire and be reckless as to its spread. He was refused bail to front Maitland Local Court on Wednesday. It carries a maximum penalty of 14 years behind bars.

Investigations into a number of other recent fires around Kurri Kurri, Abermain and Cessnock are continuing.

The fire engulfed 32 hectares of bush and scrub before crews managed to get it under control, just before 3pm on Tuesday.
