Cooks Hill Fig Trees To Be Chopped Down

Some of the big fig trees that line the streets of Cooks Hill are about to chopped down because of all the damage they're causing.

Newcastle City Council will today start removing 11 of the 24 figs in Swan Street, as part of a $5 million program to upgrade the street.

Council's insurer threatened to revoke its public liability coverage across the city if the trees weren't removed.

Interim General Manager Jeremy Bath says they've been left with no choice, calling it a "difficult decision".

"The perilous state of the figs falling down has been an ongoing issue for council and the people who live in Swan Street for a number of years," he said.

"We've had fig trees collapse in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2015."

The work's expected to take three days.
