Mine subsidence has caused a sinkhole to open up at Wallsend this morning.
It appeared on the nature strip in Macquarie Street across the road from Callaghan College.
The Mine Subsidence Board says they got the call just after 7:30am.
"We do see a spike in mine subsidence holes after heavy rainfall," MSB acting CEO Brendan Killen said.
"This hole was a couple of metres under the ground, while it was only one metre in diameter on the surface."
24 cubic metres of concrete has been poured into the hole.
