Festival goers are encouraged to get tested while enjoying this weekend's Splendour in the Grass festival at Byron Bay.

The NSW Government has set up a free STI check station in the hope that of the 30,000 revellers at the festival, some 3,000 will be tested for chlamydia - especially as statistically 10,000 people at the festival would have the STI.

"They might not show the symptoms, so people think 'I’m okay', but without testing you don't know and later it may cause serious problems like infertility or pregnancy complications in women," NSW Health's Chris Bourne said.

“Music festivals present an opportunity to reach our target audience, raise awareness of STIs and reduce the stigma around testing.”

The Down To Test VIP tent has been set up near the campsite, with a charging station, chill out lounge, 'nice' toilets and glitter bar also on offer.

For those signing up for the test, they simply need to supply their basic details and pee into a plastic cup.

This will be sent for testing, with a text in the following week providing the results.

There will also be free condoms available at the festival, with a big push for safe sex.
