A man has been shot dead and two others injured as gunfire rang out like "fireworks" in a quiet Melbourne suburb.
Several shots were fired at a Keysborough home on Tuesday night at about 9.55pm and three men, all believed to be in their 20s, were injured.
A man shot in the chest was in cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived and he died at the scene.
A man wounded in his leg and a man shot in the arm were both taken to hospital in a stable condition.
Kim Truong was doing paperwork when she heard what sounded like fireworks followed by a burnout noise.
"We thought it was just some kids things... (until) my partner left home for work around 5.30am and saw the whole street blocked off," she told AAP on Wednesday.
"It's too close to home. It's not good."
Nearby resident Angela Merchant said her family was asleep when they heard shots and then people screaming in pain.
"Hearts were racing, had a little one upstairs as well ... we were scared," she told Nine Network.
"(We) couldn't really see much and we didn't really want to, but we just heard loud screams. We knew someone was hurt."
It's unclear if one or more people fired the shots.
No arrests have been made.
Homicide squad detectives are investigating.
