Man Arrested After Kicking Guide Dog Puppy

A man is facing a possible jail sentence or fine up to $19,000 after he attacked a guide dog pup in Prahran yesterday afternoon.

The 44-year-old from Malvern east allegedly kicked the 12-month-old dog in the belly "with considerable force".

According to the Herald Sun, the dog yelped and whimpered during the attack.

The dog and its handler were outside a shop on Chapel Street when the incident happened.

The attacker has been arrested and charged by police with animal cruelty offences.

He has been granted bail and will appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on July 9.

The puppy has been assessed by a vet, with the maximum penalty for animal cruelty offences including a year in jail or fines at the $19,000 mark.
