A Hastings man has been killed in a horrific crash involving a tanker at Tyabb on Thursday night.

The 49-year-old was heading south on Dandenong-Hastings Road in a black Mercedes sedan at about 8:15pm when his car crossed to the wrong side of the road and collided with a tanker.

The B-double, which was transporting liquefied petroleum gas, caught fire as a result of the smash.

Local Bruce Thompson told AAP he heard a "massive explosion" following the collision.

"It really shook the house," he said.

Sadly the driver died at the scene, while the tanker driver was airlifted to Frankston Hospital with minor injuries.

Police say Dandenong-Hastings Road is expected to be closed between O’Neills Road and the Frankston-Flinders Road for most of the day while the scene is rehabilitated.

It's believed more than 30 emergency vehicles were required to contain the incident.
