A safety expert has warned Melbourne CBD’s bollards could slide 30m in a crash.
The Age reports the blocks, which are scattered throughout the Melbourne CBD as a temporary anti-terrorism measure, are not meant to be used as barricades.
Fairfax asked forensic mechanical engineer Dr Timothy White to estimate the impact of a standard sedan hitting one of the bollards at 40 km/hour.
He found the one-tonne blocks could slide across the tiled floor of Southern Cross Station for about 30m before coming to rest.
He said the distance could be further if the driver still had their foot on the accelerator.
