Possible breakthrough in search for missing plane

Search teams believe they're getting closer to finding the wreckage of a light plane that is believed to have crashed near Murwillumbah on the New South Wales-Queensland border.

Chief inspector Luke Arthurs said his team had found a potential crash zone.

"We've identified an area in the bush where some trees have been damaged," he said.

"We can't confirm whether or not that was from the plane, but we're searching that area now."

72-year-old Ian Sinnott was behind the controls of the ultralight aircraft, that took off from Murwillumbah Airport on Tuesday morning.
