Gold Coast waves goodbye to icon

Plenty of people fondly remember their trips aboard the Broadbeach Monorail, but from today no new memories will be made on the Gold Coast icon.

The monorail made its final run on Sunday evening, ferrying the last lot of passengers from the Oasis Shopping Centre to Jupiters Casino.

The infrastructure will be torn down within the next six months, to make way for a dining precinct and office space on the top floors of the shopping complex.

The track was built in 1989, but after 28 years declining passenger numbers and rising operational costs led to the decision to shut the doors for good.
