The RSPCA and police have seized 56 dogs and puppies across Queensland, in what they're calling their first major breakthrough into illegal dog fighting in a decade.

Four warrants were executed on properties this week at Logan, Redland Bay and Richmond, authorities believing the dogs were either being used or bred for fighting.

Inspectors also seized a number of items related to dog fighting, such as treadmills and breaking sticks.

RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty said raids were carried out after an extensive task force investigation that has been operating for the past few months.
