Police Search Continues For Missing Brisbane River Rower

Calls for assistance

A search and rescue operation is underway for a 63-year-old electrical engineer reported missing while rowing in the Brisbane River early this morning.

Police say the man was reported missing around 4.40am after his vessel became separated from two other single scull rowers in the vicinity of Orleigh Park at West End.

While the man was not seen entering the water, his vessel was located overturned in the area.

An air, water and land search has commenced.

Acting Inspector Don Dunstan told the Courier Mail said the rowers were travelling upstream when they opted to turn around.

“The two men noticed the third rower was missing and observed his kayak (scull) capsized,” he said.

“It was fairly dark at the time, no artificial lighting on the river. The tide was outgoing, there was a reasonable flow to the river at that stage.”
