Bendigo’s been named as one of the 9 regional cities shortlisted to be the location of the Qantas Group Pilot Academy.
The cities were chosen from a list of 60 applications on criteria such as uncongested airspace, a certain number of clear weather days and infrastructure to support up to 100 students in the first year of operation.
The next stage of the process will see management for the pilot academy conduct further feasibility tests on each of the 9 shortlisted sites before making a decision by the end of the 3rd quarter of the year.
Some of the other locations include Alice Springs, Dubbo, Launceston, Mackay and Wagga Wagga.
The City of Greater Bendigo says they’re looking forward to meeting with management to convince them of the city's worth to host the academy.
Qantas Group Pilot Academy Executive Manager Wes Nobelius says more than 14,000 prospective pilots have already signed up for the academy, which is expected to be ready next year.
“We think there could be enough demand from the broader industry for us to train up to 500 pilots a year, and to do that we’re likely to need two separate academies because of the practical realities of trying to do that much training in a single location.
