South Australian parents could be slapped with a 5 thousand dollar fine for chronically letting their kids skip school.
The Education Minister will introduce new laws this week with a plan to crackdown on truancy.
The courts would take the parents individual circumstances into consideration and allow for formal conferences with principals and officers so families can work with the schools, before any penalty was implemented.
Most do the right thing but John Gardner hopes the threat of sanction could be enough to get mums and dads to send their children to school.
Schools across the state are also being audited to get a better picture of student attendance rates.
