An ingenious Adelaide retiree has scored himself "a million dollar view", but he's managed to get away with it for free.

Based in the West Lakes region, Bodgan Krzywon has spent $2000 on building a homemade pontoon and now spends his days on the water, Seven News reports.

"It's like camping only there's water around there," Mr Krzywon said.

Fitted out with "all the essentials", locals have raised both amusement and concern about the floating campsite, although nothing much can really be done.

According to Charles Sturt Council bylaws, the pontoon is perfectly legal with a permit.

Krzywon said people were worried he'd be hanging around permanently, assuring that was not the case.

He added: "I'm hoping when I finish my adventures I will just sell it [the pontoon] on Gumtree."
