Townsville City Council will swap out hundreds of free water-efficient sprinklers at Cotters Markets on Sunday, to help locals become more waterwise and sustainable.

Mayor Jenny Hill said it was important residents continued their efforts to conserve water over coming months, while Council presses ahead with the new pipeline and the recycled water reuse scheme.

“It’s important that everyone does their part to conserve water until the new pipeline is built by the end of 2019 – which will provide our community long-term water security,” Cr Hill said.

“These water-efficient sprinklers cover twice the area and use half the water as traditional sprinklers – and they are better at soaking your lawns and gardens.”

Townsville Water and Waste Committee Interim Chair Cr Les Walker encouraged residents to swap their old inefficient sprinkler for a new Wobble-Tee sprinkler worth almost $35.

“Council’s previous sprinkler swap events have been extremely popular with local residents so make sure you get down to Cotters Markets on Sunday,” Cr Walker said.

“These Wobble-Tee sprinklers help save water and keep lawns and gardens even greener.

“It’s important everyone does their part to help our city stick to the daily consumption target of 135ML per day until the pipeline is built by the end of next year.”

Council’s 3-point water security solution includes:

  • The new 1.8-metre diameter pipeline
  • A recycled water re-use system for public greenspaces and industrial use
  • The Community Water Transition Support Package

The Queensland Government has contributed $225 million to water security in Townsville.
