A 72-year-old Esperance man, who was clinically dead for over 20 minutes, has been brought back to life by volunteer ambulance officers.

Robin Denton was at his home in Esperance when he had a sudden cardiac arrest. His wife Joy, called 000 and their next door neighbours rushed to help perform CPR.

Robin had no pulse for at least 22 minutes and wasn't breathing.

After extensive CPR and nine shocks from a defibrillator, his circulation returned, but he remained unconscious.

He was taken to Esperance Health Campus before being flown to Perth, where he remained in a coma for three days. He spent six weeks in Perth before being given the all clear to return home to Esperance.

Robin is unable to remember any part of the day of his heart attack but thanked his wife and neighbours and the ambulance and hospital staff who worked together to save his life.
