Grocery shopping at supermarkets looks to well and truly be a thing of the past, with Amazon Australia announcing the start of a food service.

It was announced this week that the online store would now stock tinned foods and products such as tea and coffee, as well as biscuits, cereals and chocolate.

The new category 'Pantry Food and Drinks' will appear in the drop-down menu

"Since the launch of amazon.com.au in December of last year, we have been focused on growing selection and services for Australian customers," country manager of Amazon Australia Rocco Braeuniger said.

"Today we are delighted to add to the over 80 million products already available on the store with the launch of Pantry Food and Drinks, bringing greater convenience to customers, underscored by everyday brilliant value and fast delivery."

The range will also look to include healthy food options, with fresh produce tipped to be the next addition to the virtual shelves.
