7 car habits and how to break them

Having a car isn't exactly a walk in the park - you have to take care of it, clean it and pretty much treat it like your own child. There's a lot of upkeep that comes with having a car, but when you see driving it as a privilege rather than a chore, things will start to change. But sometimes, dust builds and empty fast food wrappers multiply (you're forgiven, you're only human) without you even realising. Thankfully, there is a way to combat bad car habits and this is how you can do just that:

1. Waiting for it to rain to 'wash' your car

A rainy day is your saving grace because it means you don't have to go outside and do manual labour (washing your car) or fork out cash to go to the car wash. While rain can be seen as a safe method rather than using chemicals and such to do all the hard work, it might not be good for your car in the long run. Rain water won't get into all the nooks that are filled with dirt and grime which isn't good to left untouched. Try allocating a day once a week or fortnight or have a family member help you. Reward yourself with your favourite meal or snack after you've done it!

2. Turning your car into a wardrobe on wheels

If you're going away for the weekend or to a friends house, it's so easy to leave extra shoes, clothes, swimwear, makeup and more in your car. Before you know it, you're hoarding a mountain of wardrobe essentials in the back of your car! While it may seem practical for you and convenient, it's really not a good idea. In summer, your shoes and makeup could possibly melt from the hot temperatures and be ruined. Your clothes can deteriorate and wear quicker than they would if you washed them regularly and kept them in your wardrobe. All it takes is a few minutes to clear your car of clothes and other belongings. Set yourself a challenge to have your car emptied of unnecessary items each week!

3. #waterbottlegate

Just like clothes and makeup, water bottles seem to divide and conquer. Sometimes you think you might have 1 or 2 in the back of your car but after a good hard look, you count 13 of them. Simply buy yourself a non-plastic water bottle that can be refilled before you hop in the car. This will limit the amount of unwanted plastic bottles lying around and it will make sure your car is much cleaner! Also, make sure you don't drink out of plastic bottles that have been left in the car for too long because if the heat gets to them, the plastic melts and contaminates your water with toxins! And trust me, no one wants that!

4. Applying makeup while driving

It's seen in movies, music videos and TV shows, and while it seems fabulous and all kinds of cool, it's probably not the best thing to be doing while you're driving. You see, the best thing to be doing while you're driving is concentrate on the road and unfortunately, applying makeup means your eyes are definitely not on the road! Wake up earlier or give yourself enough time before you leave to do your makeup, and if you need a touch up before you reach your destination, simply pull over or touch up in the car before you walk in! Plus, no one will notice the fact you need to apply more lippy...especially when you're driving around, right?

5. Leaving fast food wrappers in your car

This can get out of hand so quickly and it's really not very hygienic when you think about it and, it's kinda gross. Make an effort to take all rubbish out of your car before you get out and make sure there's nothing in there before you hop in. If you get into the habit of doing this, your car will be cleaner, smell better and you'll be proud of yourself for being so tidy!

6. Using your phone while driving

There's advertisements on TV, there's campaigns on social media, there's high profile celebrities talking about the dangers of it to get you to listen - it's using your phone while driving - don't do it. In a world where checking social media is second nature and the use of emoji's is imperative when sending a text, you are responsible to drive safely, whether it's by yourself or with passengers in the car with you. Your boyfriend can wait, your Instagram likes can wait, even your mum can wait. Focus on getting to your destination safely and when you're there, reward yourself with looking at your phone. Being stopped at a set of traffic lights don't count either!

7. Not vacuuming the inside regularly and cleaning the interior

Imagine being confined to a space full of dust, dirt, possibly even mud, sand and more earthy elements. Doesn't sound too appealing, does it? That's what your car is if you don't regularly clean the interior. Just like washing your car on the outside, you should be taking care of the inside of your car too. To make it easier for you, clean the interior when you're washing your car. This way, your car will not only look good on the outside, but it will look good on the inside too. If you have car covers or a fluffy steering wheel cover, make sure you wash those too! A clean car is a good car and your overall health and wellbeing is pretty important.
