Getting out for a walk around the lake is hard enough during Canberra’s winter, let alone in your speedos!

So why are around 100 locals set to brave the chill in Santa hats and budgie smugglers this weekend?

The Santa Speedo Shuffle kicks off on Sunday July 29, where dozens of Canberrans will run around Lake Burley Griffin to raise money for locals living with cystic fibrosis.

“There’s about 100 people in the ACT and region who are living with the disease and they face a daily struggle to maintain their health and wellbeing, although often appearing to be very well,” President of Cystic Fibrosis ACT, Tania Minogue, said.

“We’re hoping to raise close to $200,000. We’re currently sitting on about $75,000 or just over. So things are looking good and donations will be accepted all the way into August.”

It’s a cause close to Tania’s heart.

“I have three boys and two have cystic fibrosis so supporting CFACT means a lot to me and my family,” she said.

While registrations have closed for the speedo run, locals can still sign up for the crazy Christmas jumper walk!

“Basically it’s like pull out your ugliest Christmas sweater, be nice and rugged up and warm, and join our speedo Santa’s in a walk around the lake,” Tania said.

Canberra’s expecting a top of 13 degrees on Sunday, with possible showers.

Despite the cold, Tania is confident the participants will give it 100%!

“We’re hoping it’ll warm up a little bit on Sunday but either way, our participants are all behind the cause, and they’ll give it their best to get around the lake and stay warm. The quicker the better.”
