They’re furry and full of sass – and hold a special place in the hearts and homes of many around the capital.

It’s International Cat Day, the purrrfect opportunity to celebrate these amazing companions!

Simon Yates from the RSPCA ACT said a lot of people reckon cats are anti-social, but that’s actually not the case.

“You can get the real smoochey cats and yes there are some aloof cats, but you get a whole mixed bag. So it’s about celebrating the joy of cat ownership and friendship.”

The shelter’s also used the day to remind locals about responsible pet ownership.

“It’s a good idea to make sure they’re de-sexed and microchipped because it’s very difficult to reunite cats with their families if they’ve gone wandering and microchipping makes it so much easier,” Mr Yates said.

He’s also reminded locals to treat their kitties to some yummy treats and toys!

“Cats really need stimulation in their life, especially if they’re an indoor only cat, which is becoming more common these days, especially in Canberra,” he said.

If you’re ready to welcome a cat to your family, the RSPCA is urging locals to adopt.

You can find the best feline for your household online, with a range of cats looking for their fur-ever home!
