NAIDOC Week kicks off with Yarkeen Exhibition

Local cafe, Jetjas and local artist, Tom Day are teaming up to present an arts exhibition in time for NAIDOC Week!

Yarkeen, which means Dreaming, is the first exhibition of Tom's, featuring art inspired by Tom's family, his surroundings and the connections he makes in his day to day life.     

Tom was born in Shepparton and raised by maternal grandparents at Lake Condah. His grandmother is Gunditjmara woman and his Grandfather a Yorta Yorta and Wemba Wemba man. 

Tom works predominately with acrylic based paints on canvas and creates artwork that reflect the world around him,  including the dreaming and creation stories told to him by his grandparents, aunties and uncles.  He draws on these stories to create his own style using both traditional and contemporary painting techniques. 

This year, the theme for NAIDOC Week is Because of Her, We Can. NAIDOC Week runs from 8-15 July.

The exhibition will run at Jetjas Cafe until Saturday, July 15.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.
