A construction worker has been hospitalised after striking a high voltage cable with a jackhammer in Sydney's west today.

The man was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in the CareFlight helicopter after hitting the 11,000 volt cable at a worksite on Popendetta Road, Bidwell.

The incident has left the man with serious burns to his arms, face, neck and back according to a NSW Ambulance spokesperson.

As a result of the accident, 13,600 homes and businesses were without power for roughly an hour in nearby areas including Hebersham, Oakhurst, Hassall Grove, Mt Druitt, Blackett, Emerton and Plumpton.

Most homes and businesses now have power reconnected, except for 50 homes in Bidwell while repairs continue.

It is understood that the man was conscious while in the chopper.
