A 36-year-old woman is facing charges after a young boy was left in a basket on the roof of a car as it drove down a freeway in Western Australia.

The four-year-old was spotted on top of the Holden Captiva on Friday on the Tonkin Highway between Camillo and Harrisdale in Perth's south.

Motorists managed to get the attention of the driver who stopped and placed the boy in the car before driving away.

It is not clear whether the driver knew the child was on the roof.

Police found the Holden pulling into a petrol station in Harrisdale, where three children, two secured in child restraint seats, were seen in the car.

Officers say the four-year-old boy was unrestrained.

The woman will be summonsed to appear in court on a dangerous driving charge at a later date.
